As Putin Sidelines Peace Talks in Turkey, Ukrainian Expert Demands Tougher Sanctions Now

As Ukrainian President Zelensky leads peace talks in Turkey, shunned by Russian President Vladimir Putin, it is more clear than ever that Russia continues only to give empty lip service to peace efforts while continuing murderous attacks. Ukrainian Campaign Group Razom We Stand urges the United States and European Union to immediately step up Russian sanctions, boost their enforcement and move forward with the stronger measures currently under proposal in both Washington and Brussels.

Ukrainian Dr. Svitlana Romanko, Founder and Executive Director of Razom We Stand, said: “So called peace talks have not stopped the horrific Russian violence we experience in Ukraine every day. Putin has made clear he will continue his attacks, and only further pressure on his economy can bring the Kremlin to move towards peace. Now is the moment to finally pass the strong U.S. sanctions bill that also propose secondary measures on Russian oil and bring tough EU sanctions that not only target the shadow fleet, but also end all EU consumption of Russian LNG gas. Measures to end our suffering by drying up Putin’s war chest must both be passed without delay.”

“Fringe voices have even called for lifting Russian sanctions or reopening gas pipelines like Nord Stream, which would be a grave step backwards. Resuming business as usual with Russian oil and gas is a recipe for disaster. Only cheaper clean energy brings real energy security, Russian fossil fuels finance war and brutality against Ukraine, and any long-term peace must be built on cutting off that revenue stream. Russian oil and gas imports are fundamentally incompatible with a just and lasting peace.”
