TOGETHER WE HAVE AN IMPACT: G7 LEADERS PLEDGED TO STRENGTHEN ENERGY SANCTIONS ON RUSSIA

We at Razom We Stand would like to express our heartfelt thanks and sincere gratitude for the invaluable support of all who endorsed the joint public appeal to the leaders of the EU and G7. More than 300 European, international, and Ukrainian NGOs have joined the call to tighten the grip of international sanctions on Russia’s key revenue streams from fossil fuel exports.

Together our voices have an impact. The need to strengthen sanctions against Russian fossil fuel exports was addressed on 24 February 2024 in a joint statement by the leaders of G7 countries on the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

“We will continue to apply significant pressure on Russian revenues from energy and other commodities. We will continue to take steps to tighten compliance and enforcement of the oil price cap. While working to maintain supply stability, we will respond to price cap violations, including by imposing additional sanctions measures on those engaged in deceptive practices while transporting Russian oil and against the networks Russia has developed to extract additional revenue from price cap violations. We will continue taking steps to limit Russia’s future energy revenues. We will continue to impede Russia’s development of future energy projects and disrupt its development of alternatives for energy shipping and other services” – reads the G7 leaders’ statement.

We all know that two years of brutal war in Ukraine have only been possible due to the over 600 billion in revenue that the Kremlin has earned from oil and gas. Yet, if international sanctions on Russia’s fossil fuel industry are maintained and rigorously enforced, the Kremlin’s expansion plans would collapse, and profits from oil and gas will plummet.

This is what Transport & Environment, Centre for Environmental Initiatives Ecoaction, Razom We Stand, Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA)Global Witness, and Environmental Action Germany have advocated for by issuing the open letter to G7 and EU and communicating it to the media.

Together with hundreds of groups and organizations from all over the world, we will continue our joint fight against the tyranny of fossil fuels and petrodictators.

We will make the leaders of EU and G7 nations accountable for their pledges. Ending Russia’s war of aggression is necessary for stability and safety across the entire world, and political leaders need to act now to make this happen.

As we continue our mission to halt Putin’s fossil-fueled war machine and advocate for positive change in clean energy in Ukraine and beyond, ongoing support from many partners, journalists and activists around the world remains invaluable.

Once again, thank you for standing with us!
