UKRAINE’S INVESTMENT POTENTIAL FOR A GREEN TRANSITION AMID COAL-FIRED THERMAL POWER PLANT CLOSURES

Ukraine’s energy supply system is deteriorating due to constant missile attacks, resulting in significant damage:

  • 9.2 gigawatts of power capacity damaged or destroyed.
  • Only 27% of power generation remains operational.
  • 73% of power generation is damaged or under repair.
  • 1.3 gigawatts of power infrastructure severely compromised.

With ongoing threats to centralized power generation and the constant losses of centralised generation such as TPPs (DTEK, Centrenergo) and CHPs (Kharkiv, etc.), it’s crucial to restructure Ukraine’s energy supply system, focusing on decentralized networks and alternative energy sources.

By joining 23 other European countries that have already committed to phasing out coal, Ukraine has outlined its intention to play an important role in the fight against climate change. It shows investors that Ukraine is open to green business and sees its future as a green energy superpower that will supply clean energy and develop clean energy technologies together with the EU.

Achieving a 40% clean energy generation target requires $3-4 billion USD to ensure 2 GW of clean capacity or 4 GW for peak coverage through interconnectors.

Are you ready to be part of this green transition?
