Razom We Stand has released a new report titled “Defusing Russian Oil and Gas Projects in the Arctic: A Wake-up Call for Climate Action”. This report sheds light on the alarming impact of Russia’s Arctic oil and gas initiatives, which are vital to the country’s economic and geopolitical ambitions and pose significant threats to global climate stability.
With Russia producing over 91% of Arctic oil and gas, major projects like Arctic LNG 2 and the Vostok Oil initiative are set to exacerbate climate challenges while expanding Russia’s military presence and enhancing its capabilities in the region.
The findings reveal that Russia’s current production levels are inconsistent with the Paris Agreement’s climate targets, necessitating drastic reductions in production from already operational fields and a complete halt to any new exploration and development. Additionally, the report emphasizes the urgent need for international cooperation to impose sanctions on Russian Arctic projects, underlining the interconnectedness of national security and climate action.
With this report Razom We Stand aims to raise awareness and push for collective efforts to halt harmful energy developments in the Arctic, highlighting the need for immediate action to protect the climate, environment and global security.
