As industry groups meeting at the CERAWeek energy summit urge G-7 nations to cut dependence on Russian LNG gas, Ukrainian campaign group Razom We Stand demands concrete action to fully sanction all Russian energy exports now and force Russia to work for peace instead of continuing its brutality against Ukraine.
While US leaders make false and disingenuous statements blaming victims for the absence of peace, Russia continues to stock its war chest and carry out horrific war crimes with funds from fossil fuel exports, which have earned an estimated €847 billion globally from the beginning of the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, until February 2025.
Svitlana Romanko, Founder and Executive Director of Razom We Stand, said,
“We welcome industry calls at CERAWeek to pressure the G7 to turn away from Russian fossil fuels, and we insist on full sanctions of Russian LNG exports now. Russia unleashed this brutal war, but instead of holding the aggressor accountable, so far, President Trump’s actions have recently deepened the suffering of Ukraine’s victims.
By allowing Russia to make billions on energy exports, the US and G7 have helped war-mongering aggressor Russia to fill their war chest, leading to more devastation and loss of life. We, Ukrainians, have endured endless Russian war crimes and fought tirelessly for peace. It’s time for Trump to focus on the actual aggressor and the G7 to take more decisive action. Full sanctions on Russian fossil fuel exports and shutting down their shadow fleet are essential steps to cut off Putin’s war machine and bring peace. Stop punishing Ukraine—hold Russia accountable for its atrocities.”
Razom We Stand calls on President Trump and the G7 to:
- Implement a complete ban on Russian LNG exports
- Crackdown on the shadow fleet by sanctioning all vessels transporting Russian oil and gas without proper insurance.
- Align sanctions enforcement across the US, EU, UK, and G7 to close loopholes that allow Russian fossil fuel revenues to flow.
Background:
Bloomberg reported today that energy industry groups called on G7 governments to diversify away from Russian gas. The plea was made in a letter signed by the International Gas Union and the US Chamber of Commerce. It followed a private meeting held on the sidelines of the CERAWEEK conference by S&P Global in Houston on Monday.
