Today, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepares to speak at COP29, Ukrainian climate and energy advocacy group Razom We Stand calls on global leaders to prioritise clean energy as the foundation for Ukraine’s recovery, security and independence.
With UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer already addressing COP29 this morning, claiming to “strongly support Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression,” Razom We Stand once again urges the need for robust sanctions from the UK and allies on Russian fossil fuel exports that indirectly fund Putin’s war chest and pay for the missiles dropped on Ukraine daily. If world leaders like Kier Starmer want to truly help Ukraine, they can start by enforcing stronger sanctions against Russian oil and gas. Words of support are welcome, but it is actions that will dismantle Russia’s fossil-fuel-driven war machine once and for all.
“Renewable energy is not just a tool for Ukraine’s recovery; it’s a strategic move to break Russia’s fossil fuel grip on the world,” said Svitlana Romanko, Founder and Executive Director of Razom We Stand. “President Zelenskyy and world leaders like Kier Starmer at COP29 have a critical opportunity to invest in decentralised, renewable energy systems that will empower Ukraine to build back stronger, more resilient to attacks, and independent of Russia’s fossil fuel chokehold. Investing in Ukraine’s renewable transition is a direct step toward building a more secure, climate-resilient world—one that prioritises sustainable growth and reduces the risks of fossil-fuel-driven conflicts.”
Razom We Stand urges world leaders to invest in Ukraine’s renewable energy infrastructure, creating a resilience model beyond mere reconstruction. This renewable rebuilding of Ukraine could bring significant job growth—potentially creating up to 4.2 million green jobs—while strengthening Ukraine’s sovereignty and undercutting Russia’s influence in global energy markets.
The investment and integration of renewable energy sources are not only economically advantageous and create jobs but are also essential to global energy security and Ukraine’s long-term stability, as decentralised systems are considerably more difficult to disable than incapacitating a conventional power plant.
